Episode 002

The Technology Is Not the Product

You remember whether it worked. Never how.

Most people have never chosen a financial product because of the technology inside it.

Think about it. You didn't pick your bank for its database. You didn't choose a card for its network protocol. You don't send money because you admire the settlement layer.

You chose the thing that made a problem go away. Rent got paid. The bill got split. Money reached someone you love, and it just… worked. Afterwards you remembered the outcome — not a single thing about how it happened.

That's the part builders keep getting backwards. We fall in love with the mechanism and assume the customer will too. They won't. The technology is the cost of admission. The outcome is the product.

The best financial companies of the next decade will spend enormous effort on technology their customers will never notice, in service of a moment their customers will never forget.

What's the last financial product you actually loved — and could you explain how it works?
