The Best Financial Infrastructure Disappears

If you can see the infrastructure, something has already gone wrong.

Tap a card and it feels like nothing happened. Behind that nothing: an authorization request, a route across networks, a fraud check, a currency decision, a settlement promise, a dozen systems agreeing in milliseconds that you are who you say you are and the money is where you say it is.

You experience none of it. And that's the entire achievement.

You only ever meet the infrastructure when it fails — the card declined in another country, the transfer that says “on its way” for three days, the app that picks the worst possible moment to log you out. Suddenly the plumbing is all you can think about, because plumbing only announces itself when it breaks.

This is the strange thing about building infrastructure: your best work is the work nobody will ever see. Success isn't applause. It's absence — the absence of every problem that quietly didn't happen.
